U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the Gaza Strip should be turned into what he called a “free zone” controlled by the United States, although the specifics of his proposal remain unclear.
“I have concepts for Gaza that I think are very good—make it a free zone, let the United States get involved and turn it into a freedom zone. Have a true zone of freedom, because it seems like Gaza, every time, every ten years, and even more frequently, something happens,” Trump said.
“It actually happens all the time. The Gaza problem doesn’t get solved,” he added.
Trump said that “if necessary, he believes he would be proud for the U.S. to take it and make it a free zone,” according to AA, as reported by Telegrafi. “Let some good here things happen. Put people in homes where they can be safe,” continued the American president.
Notably, Trump first introduced his proposal for the U.S. to take ownership of Gaza back in February.
The plan was widely opposed by nations around the world, but he has continued to repeat it over the past three months.
However, his description of a “freedom zone” is a new development.
Details of what this would entail remain scarce, as the president did not provide further clarification.
